With a vast clinical portfolio spanning across the public and private sectors, Dr Hugo brings a wealth of experience to his role and remains committed to evidence-based, outcomes-driven patient care.
Dr Hugo graduated from Stellenbosch University with his MBChB in 2003, and went on to complete a Master’s in Exercise and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He then specialised in orthopaedic surgery at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch, achieving both his MMed Ortho and Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery.
Following his qualification, Dr Hugo was appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant at Tygerberg Hospital and took on the role of Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University.
In 2016, recognising the need for expanded orthopaedic services in under-resourced communities, he moved to Khayelitsha District Hospital, where he established and led the Orthopaedic Department. During his eight years there, he focused on optimising orthopaedic care in a district hospital setting and mentoring medical officers and registrars during their orthopaedic training.
Dr Hugo’s clinical interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, sports medicine, and the management of complex fractures in children and adults. He has completed numerous advanced training courses in Europe and the UK.
He is also a published author and frequent contributor to national and international trauma forums, with research featured in leading journals such as the South African Orthopaedic Journal and The Lancet.
Dr Hugo is married to Liesle, an organisational psychologist, and father of two. He enjoys mountain biking, travelling, playing the guitar, and comedy.
Dr Hugo practises from the Orthopaedic Institute in Durbanville, South Africa, where he is currently working alongside Dr Hennie Bosch, focusing on hip arthroscopy and arthroplasty.
